The Selective Service System (SSS) is an independent Executive Agency within the United States Federal Government and the Director of the SSS reports directly to the President of the United States. SSS is a trusted, actively engaged Military Defense partner, and the sole source of conscripted talent for national security in the event of a national emergency. Registering with Selective Service allows young men to stay eligible for jobs, college loans and grants, job training, and driver's license in most states.

The SSS has several important missions and is seen as a hedge against unforeseen threats. The presentation will touch on a brief history of the SSS, how it has evolved and continues to evolve over time, and the importance of a financial strategic plan and an enterprise risk management system.

 Bio:

Senator Donald Benton, was appointed the 13th Director of Selective Service by President Donald J. Trump on 11 April 2017. In this capacity, Senator Benton directs an independent agency of the Executive Branch to provide trained and untrained manpower to the Department of Defense when directed by the President and the United States Congress, supporting America’s all-volunteer force during a national emergency. Prior to his appointment as Director of Selective Service, he served as President-elect Trump’s Transition Team lead and later as a Senior Advisor to President Trump at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Senator Benton is the son of a Retired Naval Officer and is the brother of two Vietnam combat veterans, one a Naval Aviator and one a decorated Army Paratrooper.

Senator Benton has served for over 30 years in elected public service: he served the citizens of Washington State for 20 years in the Washington State Senate; was elected Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party; and was a member of the Washington State House of Representatives for two years. Additionally, he was elected twice to the Santa Clarita College Board of Trustees, serving as President of the Board. Senator Benton also served as the appointed Director of Clark County Department of Environmental Services, where he was instrumental in leading change through dramatically reducing expenditures while simultaneously increasing citizen participation in environmental programs.

An accomplished entrepreneur, Senator Benton built multiple companies and provided countless jobs to Americans. He started his first company with his sister Nancy when he was 17 years old. Additionally, he is a past-President of the Jaycees; was an American Red Cross volunteer and Board Chairman for many years; has been an Assistant Scout Leader and Merit Badge Counselor in the Boy Scouts of America for over 12 years and has two sons who attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

The Director is a graduate of Concordia University where he received a degree in business management and communication. He and his wife have been married for 36 years and have four children.
